Face lift surgery (rhytidectomy) is a cosmetic operation performed to create a younger look on your face. This is a surgery performed to reduce sagging or folds in the cheek and jawline area and other flaws that aging causes. Face lift results are not permanent. Sagging might repeat as you age. Usually, face lift surgery effects expected to last 10 year.

Why and to Whom Face Lift is Performed?

As you age, shape of your face and the appearance changes due to the natural age-related changes. Your skin becomes looser and less elastic. While fat deposits decrease in some areas of your face, it increases in other areas. With face lift surgery, excess skin under the chin, sagging on your face, deepening of the skin fold from the edge of your nose to the corner of your mouth, neck sagging and excess fat (if the procedure involves a neck lift), you get a younger appearance. Factors affecting the condition of your skin and the shape of your face, if you have a history of repeated weight gain and loss, the results of the surgery may be unsatisfactory or only for a short period of time.

Risks and Complications

Face lift might have some complications. These complications can prevent with proper care, medication and surgical correction. Even though they are rare, some complications can cause permanent or long-term changes in the appearance. The most common complication of the face lift surgery is a blood collection under the skin causing pressure and swelling (hematoma). The scars taken from face lift surgery are permanent. But they are usually covered with hairline and natural contours of the face and ear. Although they are rare, permanently or temporarily, nerve injury can affect the nerves that control the senses of muscles. Very rarely, face lift can disrupt the blood flow to your facial tissues and this can cause skin loss (sagging).

Pre-consultation Before Face Lift

Using some specific drugs before surgery might cause bleeding, infections and sagging. Because of this reason your doctor might ask you to cut off of using some medications and drugs like blood-thinners and medications that increases the risk of hematoma and coagulation of blood after surgery. If you have a medical condition that prevents blood clotting, you cannot under-go face lift surgery. Before the operation, you should stop using cigarettes and alcohol derivatives.

After Face Lift

After face lift surgery you may experience swelling, numbness, bruising, mild to moderate pain. If you experience shortness of breath, chest pain and irregular heartbeat, contact your doctor immediately. After surgery, your wounds will likely be covered with bandages that provide gentle pressure to minimize swelling and bruising. To drain excess blood or fluid, a small tube may be placed under the skin behind one or both of your ears. Take care of your wounds as directed by your doctor. Follow instructions on when to start using shampoos and soaps and what types you can use. Avoid excessive pressure or movement on and around the incisions. Avoid wearing makeup for a while.
